Students in Mukilteo, Lynnwood and elsewhere are tightening their laces and Velcro straps for National Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Students at Columbia Elementary School in Mukilteo are celebrating with “Walktober Wednesdays,” organized by physical education teacher Hazel Beiermann.
Beiermann, along with a special guest, will meet walking students and parents each Wednesday at the Mukilteo Library to walk together the rest of the way to school, less than a half-mile.
“It’s to get out and start the day off with some exercise with my kids,” Beiermann said.
Many of the children who take part are usually driven to school by a parent. So part of the program also helps them learn safety tips, like crossing streets with the help of crossing guards.
(On a related note, drivers also are encouraged to “Go Slow” and review school zone safety rules.)
Beiermann also organizes a running club and other fun activities throughout the year to get kids active.
“It’s just all about fitness and being healthy,” she said.
Other Edmonds School District schools hold “walking school buses,” with parents leading groups of neighborhood kids to and from campus.
Lynnwood Elementary School also plans to mark Walk to School Day by greeting walkers with a healthy breakfast snack that morning.
