The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Helicopter Rescue Team shared a video demonstrating ways to help rescuers find you if you’re lost in the backcountry at night.
The video shows methods of illumination and how well they show up on night-vision goggles. The clear winner was a small fire. Just a little 6-inch fire shows up like a bonfire on the goggles.
If you’re lost and hear a helicopter, however, any source of light will help. Items as simple as a cellphone, lighter or headlamp can help searchers locate you.
The video was recorded through night vision goggles from the helicopter looking at the light sources from one mile away.
And, while we’re at it, here’s another video (below) giving a look at some of what the team does on training missions.
I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: I’m really impressed with the Helicopter Rescue Team we have here. I hope I never, need them. But I’m glad they’re here.
