Back near the previous turn of the century, my great-great uncle Charles Ransom Delap, “Rans,” was sheriff of Multnomah County, Oregon, when my grandfather came out this way to work the donkey engines in lumber camps. At the time he was packing a nickle-plated revolver, and his uncle Rans told him, “George, get rid of that thing! After all this isn’t the wild West anymore.” What would my great-great uncle think of the recent goings-on in Roseburg, and the current sheriff’s attitudes regarding gun control? He would probably think civilization had taken a step backwards.
