Eunice Ishii of Mukilteo writes: “On weekends and especially when the weather is beautiful, the Mukilteo ferry traffic backs up. Those who wait patiently at 84th (Street SW) so as not to cause traffic gridlock have no chance to advance with right-turners freely turning on red. A ‘no turn on red’ is necessary for traffic flow. Usually state troopers arrive much too late. … We have been in traffic backed up to Paine Field Boulevard, so it’s ripe for a solution. We just want to get home.”
Tom Pearce of WSDOT responds: “We’ve taken an initial look at this request; while there may be some value to a ‘no turn on red’ at certain times, the vast majority of the time that restriction is not needed and could create additional traffic problems. We’re considering other signing options, such as a sign that restricts right turns on red, which would activate during certain conditions, and evaluating whether a sign like this would help address this situation.”
