Rain gardens
The city of Edmonds in partnership with WSU Master Gardeners and the Snohomish Conservation District is building a neighborhood cluster of six rain gardens to help address the city’s stormwater runoff. Stop by 8324 Sierra Drive in Edmonds from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 10 to help plant the rain gardens and to learn how rain gardens work. This event is free. Pancake breakfast: Mukilteo firefighters plan a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fire Station 25, 10400 47th Place W. Firefighters and police officers will be cooking pancakes, ham and eggs. Proceeds go to the Mukilteo Firefighters Benevolent Fund. Food bank donations also will be accepted.
Purple Light Nights: Mountlake Terrace plans its eighth annual Purple Light Nights Campaign as part of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Purple light bulbs are displayed in town, in houses and on front porches during the month. People are encouraged to do so. Free bulbs are available for participants.

Pink shirts: Firefighters in north Snohomish County look a little different this month. Crews with the North County Regional Fire Authority, based in Stanwood, are wearing pinks shirts for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
They also will be placing breast cancer awareness magnets on all of their fire rigs. A similar campaign is under way in Lynnwood.
