EVERETT — Carson Stadnyk is the top returning point producer for the Everett Silvertips and is expected to shoulder a significant part of the scoring load this season.
It took four games for Stadnyk to register his first point of the season, but he made up for lost time in the fifth as he tallied two goals and two assists in Everett’s 5-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders before 3,221 fans Sunday evening at Xfinity Arena.
“To get the monkey off the back was a nice feeling especially at home to do it,” Stadnyk said. “Hopefully I can get more from now on.”
Stadnyk had the game-winning assist in Saturday’s 5-4 overtime victory against Spokane before erupting for four points Sunday.
“He was getting scoring chances in the first games, but you always want the points to be attached to your work and your scoring chances, so it’s nice to see him get some points,” Everett head coach Kevin Constantine said.
Everett (4-1-0-0) finished a perfect 2-0 during its first homestand while Prince Albert (4-2-0-1) remained winless on the road in the only regular-season contest between the two teams.
Noah Juulsen added a goal and two assists, while Matt Fonteyne and Dawson Leedahl also scored as Everett tallied the game’s first five goals to take a commanding lead.
If there was a drawback on Sunday, however, it was the late goals by Prince Albert’s Matteo Gennaro and Simon Stransky to sully an impressive performance by Tips goaltender Carter Hart, who finished with 25 saves.
Most of Prince Albert’s’s opportunities came in the third period with the Tips well in control.
“They got a lot of scoring chances and a lot of shots, and besides the two goals Hart had to make three or four spectacular saves,” Constantine said. “We didn’t keep it going the way we should, but overall on the weekend and this game it was a really good effort.”
Everett committed a pair of sloppy first-period penalties — delay of game and too many men on the ice — which limited the Silvertips’ opportunities to establish and sustain momentum.
The second period was a different story. Juulsen put Everett on the board 32 seconds in when he collected a pass from Fonteyne at the point on the power play and slapped it past Prince Albert goaltender Ian Scott for the 1-0 lead.
Stadnyk’s first goal came via some impressive stick work to maneuver through a pair of Prince Albert defenders at 3:45 in the second period. The goal also came on a power play opportunity as the Silvertips converted 3 of its 6 opportunities.
Leedahl made it 3-0 just 10 seconds later when he deflected in Lucas Skrumeda’s shot from the high slot, and Stadnyk’s second goal came on a feed from Devon Skoleski at 8:02 that Stadnyk was able to push across the goal line while falling to the ice.
“We didn’t really get to generate a lot of things (in the first period),” Stadnyk said. “In the second got going we just found a rhythm.”
The Raiders’ best scoring chance in the period came with 21 seconds to go when Reid Gardiner stole the puck on a poor Everett exchange and had a clear path to the goal. But Hart made the glove save to keep the shutout intact.
Fonteyne scored Everett’s third power play goal off a feed from Graham Millar at 6:21 in the third.
It was then that the Tips appeared to let up. Gennaro spoiled the shutout with an unassisted wrist shot past Hart at 11:29 in the third and Stransky added another goal on a rebound at 15:46.
“You gotta learn to play in this game when you’re down, (and) you’ve got to learn to play with a lead,” Constantine said. “You have to learn to not let the scoreboard affect how you’re committed and engaged. We did (that) a little. We let the scoreboard let us off the hook in terms of how much we were engaged mentally.”
Everett now has another week of practice before it travels to Portland Friday for a 7:05 game.
