SEATTLE — Officials say a system error caused several thousand drivers to be charged twice for trips in the express toll lanes on Interstate 405.
Washington State Department of Transportation officials say over 3,300 drivers were overcharged after their system sent an incorrect message that certain passes and license plates could not be read. A customer representative then billed those vehicles not knowing they already had been billed.
Signs over the weekend also erroneously said vehicles needed three people inside, instead of two, to drive in the express lanes.
Anyone who sees suspicious charges on their bill is asked to call the Department of Transportation for a refund.
