Winterhawks beat Silvertips 5-1

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Winterhawks scored the game’s final four goals, handing the Everett Silvertips a 5-1 defeat Friday night.

Evan Weinger scored two goals to lead Portland, which won for just the second time this season and ended Everett’s three-game winning streak.

Paul Bittner, Jack Dougherty and Dominic Turgeon scored the other goals for Portland (2-5-0-0), which avenged its 3-1 loss to Everett in its home opener two weeks ago.

Adin Hill played a strong game in goal for the Winterhawks, making 33 saves. That included stoning both Dawson Leedahl and Patrick Bajkov on breakaways while the game was still close.

Bajkov scored the lone goal for Everett (4-2-0-0). Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart stopped 36 of the 41 shots he faced before being removed midway through the third period. Mario Petit saved all five shots he faced in relief.

The Winterhawks kept the Tips pinned back for much of the first period, outshooting Everett 19-6, and Portland took the lead 5 minutes, 29 seconds into the game when Bittner put in a rebound from close range to stake the Winterhawks to a 1-0 lead.

Everett tied it on the power play 7:11 into the second period. Bajkov put in a rebound from Noah Juulsen’s point shot to knot it at 1-1. The goal was the Tips their seventh over a stretch of 11 chances with the advantage.

But Portland wasted little time regaining control of the game. Weinger beat Hart with a shot off the rush just 1:31 later to restore the Winterhawks’ lead, then Dougherty scored on the power play with a shot from the point following a faceoff win, making it 3-1.

Portland put the game away in the third, with Turgeon sneaking a shot past a screened Hart at 7:39 and Weinger having a shot deflect off Hart’s glove and in at 11:57. Weinger’s goal sent Hart to the bench in favor of Petit.
