EVERETT — Neighbors who fought Snohomish County over plans for a sports park in the Maltby area may soon face the prospect of schools being built on that same land.
The County Council on Wednesday approved selling the 104-acre property known as Wellington Hills to the Northshore School District for $11.2 million. The district is eyeing the land at 6920 240th St. NE, east of the Woodinville Costco, for future school buildings as the student population grows.
The council also approved buying 65 acres on Highway 9 known as Carousel Ranch as an alternative site for an area park. The price is $9 million for the property located at 21815 Highway 9, just north of King County’s Brightwater sewage plant.
Money for the purchase is coming from the $70 million settlement that Snohomish County reached in 2005 for Brightwater impacts.
All measures passed with a 5-0 vote. Another hearing related to the purchase is set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 28.
The county paid the University of Washington $9.7 million for the Wellington property, later contracting for nearly $1 million in design and construction work there.
The UW had once eyed the land as a possible branch campus site. A nine-hole golf course operated there for more than 80 years, but closed after the county’s purchase.
