Here’s the highlights from Pete Carroll’s Monday morning radio show on 710 AM:
– Carroll’s opening statement included the following: “It’s unbelievable this could happen to us.” He was talking about the way the Seahawks lost another fourth-quarter lead, but also about how the team lost for the third time this season despite winning the turnover battle, something that goes against the stats.
– As for why the Seahawks lost another fourth-quarter lead, Carroll said it was largely the same thing that’s happened in the other games this season where that’s happened. There was no one thing that caused Seattle to lose a nine-point fourth-quarter advantage against Carolina on Sunday, it was a matter of making plays at the key times, which the opposition did and the Seahawks didn’t. He later went on to say both the offense and defense need to execute better in the fourth quarter, with the offense needing to make some first downs to drain some clock, and the defense needing to get a stop when the opposition is in its hurry-up offense.
– Carroll again said Seattle should be 6-0. He emphasized that the season is not done, it’s just been very difficult, and the players’ attitude toward the predicament has been good. He said the short week, which sees Seattle travel to San Francisco on Thursday, is a good thing for the team because the Seahawks won’t be able to dwell upon another late loss.
– Carroll was asked about the play of quarterback Russell Wilson, whose numbers are good although the team is 2-4. Carroll said there are still times when Wilson’s reads and decision making can be better.
– Three things Carroll believes the Seahawks absolutely have to do better: 1) Convert in the red zone; 2) Convert on third down; 3) Capitalize on turnovers. He specifically added that converting on third down should help the running game get into more of a rhythm.
– Carroll said center Patrick Lewis, who got the start in place of Drew Nowak, played a solid game, but that it wasn’t all that different from what the team was getting out of Nowak, and that it’s yet to be determined who will start Thursday.
– On the injury front, Carroll said linebacker Bobby Wagner (pectoral) could have played Sunday, but that it wasn’t the right thing to do. He’s hopeful Wagner will be able to go Thursday, but that Wagner wouldn’t have been able to play against the 49ers had he played against the Panthers. With players being eligible to be activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list this week, Carroll said receiver Paul Richardson may be activated, but cornerback Jeremy Lane is still a couple weeks away.
