Silvertips notebook: Leslie reassigned to Lloydminster

The Everett Silvertips announced Monday they’ve re-assigned 16-year-old defenseman Jantzen Leslie to the Lloydminster (Alberta) Bobcats midget AAA team.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise as Leslie was Everett’s first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2014 bantam draft. A Lloydminster native, the 6-foot-1, 170-pounder scored a goal and had nine assists in 32 games with the Bobcats a season ago.

Leslie also appeared in six games for the Silvertips during the 2014-15 season during which he recorded three assists. He did not register a point in three games this season.

The move leaves Everett with seven defensemen and four other 16-year-olds on the roster for a total of 23 active players — generally the number the organization desires.

Juulsen, Hart selected for Team WHL

Everett goaltender Carter Hart and defenseman Noah Juulsen were named to Team WHL that will take on Team Russia next month in a series of exhibition games in the CHL Canada-Russia Series.

Team WHL faces Team Russia in Game 1 of the series Nov. 9 in Kelowna, British Columbia. The two teams square off again the next night in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The Ontario Hockey League plays host to Game 3 on Nov. 12 in Owen Sound, Ontario, and Game 4 on Nov. 16 in Windsor, Ontario.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League concludes the series as the host for Game 5 on Nov. 17 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Game 6 on Nov. 19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Team WHL forwards are Mathew Barzal (Seattle), Conner Bleackley (Red Deer), Rourke Chartier (Kelowna), Jake DeBrusk (Swift Current), Ryan Gropp (Seattle), Jansen Harkins (Prince George), Jayce Hawryluk (Brandon), Nick Merkley (Kelowna), Nolan Patrick (Brandon), Brayden Point (Moose Jaw), Brett Pollock (Edmonton) and John Quenneville (Brandon).

Defensemen include Juulsen, Kale Clague (Brandon), Haydn Fleury (Red Deer), Brendan Guhle (Prince Albert), Joe Hicketts (Victoria) and Travis Sanheim (Calgary). Moose Jaw’s Zach Sawchenko is the other goaltender.

The team will be coached by Victoria head coach Dave Lowry.

The series will be broadcast live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

Lotz pitches shutout for Medicine Hat

Former Everett goaltender Austin Lotz recorded a shutout Saturday in his second game since being selected by the Medicine Hat Tigers in last Thursday’s overage draft.

Lotz recorded 27 saves in the Tigers’ 6-0 win over Calgary. The 20-year-old netminder also earned the win with 28 saves and three goals allowed in Medicine Hat’s 6-3 victory over Kootenay on Friday.

Swift Current’s Martin named Player of the Week

Swift Current Broncos forward Jon Martin was named the WHL Player of the Week on Monday. Martin collected two goals and five assists in three games last week. The Winnipeg native is tied for first in the WHL in scoring with 19 points.

Meanwhile, Prince Albert goaltender Ian Scott was the WHL’s nominee for CHL Goaltender of the Week. Scott recorded two wins, including one shutout, to go along with a 0.60 goals against average and a .980 save percentage. He recorded 50 saves in 51 chances over the weekend.
