SEATTLE — A BNSF Railway spokesman said an Amtrak passenger train has struck and killed a male pedestrian in south Seattle.
Spokesman Gus Melonas says witnesses reported seeing the man crossing the tracks at South Lander Street near 3rd Ave. South on Monday afternoon. He said it appears that railroad crossing gates, flashers and sidewalk protectors were working.
Seattle police said detectives are investigating whether the man ignored crossing signals.
Train traffic in the area has been temporarily halted while the crash is investigated.
Melonas said this is the 21st fatality this year on BNSF rail tracks in Washington state.
