Salem Woods project shows school pride
Parent volunteers joined students at Salem Woods Elementary School in Monroe Oct. 13-15 to tie-dye 475 “Timberbeast Pride” T-shirts, one for each student at the school. The big project was aimed at boosting school pride. Shirts were dyed in the school’s colors, blue and white. Students will be encouraged to wear the shirts on school spirit days.
“Timberbeasts are the school’s mascot and the name comes from the history of the area where loggers were often referred to as Timberbeasts by the Native American families living here,” said Rosemary O’Neil, a Monroe School District spokesperson.

Mary Myers, the assistant director of Health Services for the Monroe School District, was named School Nurse Administrator of the Year at the recent conference of the School Nurse Organization of Washington.
Myers has worked as a nurse in Monroe schools for almost 30 years, starting when her children, now grown, attended Maltby Elementary School.
“I thought, ‘I’ll do this for a short time and move on,’” she said. “I never dreamt I’d be staying for a lifetime.”
