TACOMA — A federal judge has sentenced a Port Orchard man to four years in prison on wire fraud and tax evasion charges.
Hyun Seung Kim was also ordered to pay nearly $2.5 million in restitution to Washington state for the tobacco taxes he owes and almost $300,000 to the U.S. Treasury.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Kim’s business, CP Trading Company, bought and distributed wholesale non-cigarette tobacco products to retailers in a half-dozen counties. He would use cash to buy tobacco products from a smoke shop on the Puyallup Indian Reservation and used checks to buy a small portion of the products.
Officials say Kim reported the purchases made by check and paid taxes on those purchases, but he didn’t report the things he bought with cash.
This went on between 2009 and 2013.
