TACOMA — Authorities have identified the 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot by a friend at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The News Tribune reported that Alexander Demello was shot in the face Oct. 20 while walking in a wooded area of JBLM with his 14-year-old brother and 17-year-old friend. He died Sunday after several days in the hospital.
The boy’s brother reportedly told police he heard a gunshot, saw his brother on the ground and the older boy with a gun in his hand.
Court documents say the 17-year-old ran from the scene and gave a backpack containing bloody clothing and a handgun to a friend. He has been charged with third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The 17-year-old allegedly told police the shooting was an accident.
