The problem is Halloween candy. There’s too much sugary temptation around the house once trick or treaters finish their rounds. It’s either eat it, toss it, take it to work or donate it.
Local donation options include dental office candy buy-backs and a clothing store that’s collecting candy to send to U.S. troops overseas. Here are places to donate candy:
For the troops: Scrub City, an Everett store that sells apparel for medical workers, is collecting candy for Operation Gratitude. The nonprofit group sends care packages to members of the U.S. military and veterans. Candy will be included in holiday packages being sent overseas.
Last year, Scrub City provided more than 150 pounds of candy, letter and drawings for the cause. Donations of candy, letters and drawings are needed by Nov. 16. Dental buy-backs: An orthodontist with offices in Lake Stevens and Marysville and a south Snohomish County dentist are offering to buy leftover Halloween candy and will donate to charities.
Starting Monday, orthodontist Dr. Jason Bourne will pay kids bringing Halloween treats to his offices $2 per pound of candy, and for each pound will also donate $2 to Boys &Girls Clubs of Snohomish County and the YMCA of Snohomish County. Bourne Orthodontics collected more than 1,000 of candy last year and made more than $2,000 in donations. Candy collected is donated to U.S. troops serving overseas, homeless shelters, cancer centers and groups doing humanitarian work in Africa.

A south county dentist, Dr. Roger Lucas, will be accompanied by the Tooth Fairy 4-6 p.m. Thursday as he collects candy at the Lynnwood Kids Dentist office. Children will receive $1 for each pound of candy donated, with a maximum of 5 pounds per child. Candy, which must be unopened, will be donated to military members through Operation Gratitude.
