Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette undergoing neck surgery

Here’s the statement the Seahawks released Monday morning regarding injured receiver Ricardo Lockette:

“Wide receiver Ricardo Lockette sustained ligament damage in his neck that requires surgery to stabilize. He will undergo surgery this afternoon at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He has full motion and feeling in all extremities and his prognosis is good. We will provide an update following surgery.”

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had more details about Lockette on his radio show Monday morning on 710 AM:

– Lockette’s surgery was “within the hour” of his show, which was at 9:45.

– Lockette was in good spirits and was not too uncomfortable.

– Lockette will be placed on injured reserve and will not return this season. When asked whether the injury was potentially career threatening, Carroll said he didn’t know.

– The injury hit the rest of the team hard emotionally when it happened.

– Carroll thought the hit by Dallas’ Jeff Heath was bad. He said it was from straight ahead, but that it was too high. Heath was given a 15-yard penalty on the play.

– Carroll expects some of Lockette’s teammates to visit during the bye week.

Some other things Carroll touched on in his radio show:

– Carroll was encouraged by Sunday’s 13-12 victory at Dallas. He said it was a good football game, and he was particularly pleased with the progress made by the offensive line, which didn’t allow a sack. Carroll praised the play of Alvin Bailey, who stepped in for the injured Russell Okung at left tackle.

– Carroll said the difference between the fourth quarter Sunday and previous fourth quarter collapses was execution. Seattle’s offense was able to convert some third downs the way it didn’t in the past, and the defense stepped up when needed, particularly after the interception that gave the Cowboys the ball in the red zone.

– Carroll said the staff would spend the bye week self scouting. He likes the direction the team is going into the bye, coming off back-to-back road victories. Seattle’s first three games after the bye are at home.

– Carroll said receiver Paul Richardson, who wasn’t activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list for Sunday’s game despite being healthy, will be back in the mix following the bye. He also said cornerback Jeremy Lane, who’s also been on the PUP list, should be able to return to practice following the bye.
