Prep football: Lakewood 24, Shorecrest 19

ARLINGTON — Tyler Courtney rushed for 182 yards on 32 carries and accounted for three touchdowns to lead the Cougars past the Scots in a 2A District 1 play-in game on Tuesday night.

Courtney rushed for a pair of scores in the first half, but he caught a 16-yard pass from Austin Lane late in the third quarter to put Lakewood (6-4) ahead to stay.

He also added a sack from his hybrid linebacker/defensive end position on Shorecrest’s final drive to preserve the lead.

“I’m so proud of him,” Lakewood coach Dan Teeter said of Courtney. “He’s a team captain and a leader and he competed his heart out all night for us. He was an iron horse out there tonight and it was a real privilege to watch him go out and play so well when the team needed him to do well.”

The Cougars will play undefeated Squalicum on Saturday evening at Civic Stadium in Bellingham with a state berth on the line.

“That’ll be our third game in nine days, which seems crazy to me,” Teeter said. “We’ll have very little time to prepare and they’re undefeated in the toughest 2A conference in the whole state. We’ll definitely have our hands full, but we’re happy to still be playing. We’ll rally up and give it our best shot.

Will Brennan rushed for 206 yards on 22 carries and pair of touchdowns for Shorecrest (3-6).
