For the past six years I have had the pleasure of helping at a phenomenal event known as the “Puget Sound Festival of Bands.” This annual, day-long event hosted by the Cascade High School Band and Color Guard Boosters is one of the premier high school marching band competitions in the Northwest. The 28th annual Puget Sound Festival of Bands held Oct. 24 was a resounding success.
This year’s event showcased the talents of 20 band and color guard teams representing high schools from Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The dedication, commitment and hours of sacrificial time and effort invested by students and staff are evident in each spectacular performance. The pageantry of the music, the dance, the props and the stories are magical. This year’s performances took us to places such as Egypt, Pompeii, New York and outer space; we saw volcanoes, a Sphinx, snowflakes, fairy tale characters and much more. The teams were adjudicated by eight of the nation’s best marching band judges in categories such as music, color guard, visual effects and percussion. Top honors went to Central Valley, (Spokane), Kamiak (Mukilteo) and Hanford, (Richland) with the People’s Choice Award going to Hanford.
Not only does the event highlight a great tradition of music in our schools, it is notable in the way it brings together past and present band families, friends, local business and donors who collectively ensure the success of the program. It truly embodies the community spirit. Therefore, it is with overwhelming pride in our band program and in our community that I thank the event coordinators, volunteers, donors, businesses and the city of Everett for their generous contributions to the success of this event.
