The long, crazy road to recovery for Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane

Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane is back practicing with the team after suffering a gruesome broken arm and a torn ACL during the Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots, and there’s a chance he’ll be activated from the physically-unable-to-play list in time for Sunday’s crunch home game against the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals.

Lane spoke to the media for the first time Wednesday, and he related a few crazy stories about his injuries.

First, Lane had to be taken straight to the hospital from the field to undergo surgery, because the bone in his arm came through his skin. So he didn’t get to see the rest of the game. Or at least most of the game:

“When I woke up [after surgery] we were on the 1-yard line. Say no more.

“I saw that play and I went back to sleep. Then I woke up and was like, ‘Was that a dream?’ I don’t want to talk about it.”

Second, Lane didn’t even know about the ACL tear until well after dealing with the arm injury:

“I didn’t know my ACL was torn until a month later. I came back from repairing my arm and I was like, ‘Damn, my knee is still bothering me a little bit.’ They were like, ‘It was probably just a bone contusion because that’s where I got hit.’ I was like, ‘Maybe you’re right because my walk started getting better.’ Then down the line I was like, ‘Nah, something’s not right,’ because I was grocery shopping and it kind of gave out one day. Then we went and checked it out and, ‘By the way, torn ACL.’”

And lastly, Lane had to undergo multiple surgeries on his arm because of an infection, which Lane suspected was caused by the turf from University of Phoenix Stadium:

“[The arm] was still infected from the turf and the grass and stuff from the first surgery. I had surgery right away when I broke my arm because it came out of the skin. I guess a couple months later they realized everything wasn’t cleaned out and wasn’t healing right. So I had to go back in hand have multiple surgeries.”

So it’s been a long road to recovery for Lane. But he says he feels great now and is ready to play Sunday, if the Seahawks let him.
