Spokane ends Silvertips’ 3-game win streak with 3-0 shutout

SPOKANE — Lasse Petersen’s Spokane debut couldn’t have gone much better.

The Chiefs goaltender, recently acquired from Calgary, recorded 24 saves as Spokane knocked off the visiting Everett Silvertips 3-0 Wednesday before 3,721 fans at Spokane Arena.

Everett (8-5-0-1, 17 points) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and missed a golden opportunity to move into a second-place tie in the WHL’s U.S. Division. Instead Spokane (9-7-2-1, 21 points) jumped into a first-place tie with division-leading Seattle with its third straight victory.

The Silvertips opened the contest by out-shooting the Chiefs 11-3 in the opening period. But Spokane dominated the final two stanzas with a 29-13 shot advantage and finished with 32 shots to Everett’s 24.

The game was Everett’s sixth consecutive contest decided by a single goal. The Tips are among the league leaders in power play conversion, but finished 0-for-3 on the evening. In contrast Spokane utilized a 2-for 3 showing in its man advantage.

The Chiefs finally struck the back of the net late in the second period. Curtis Miske scored on a wrister from the top of the left circle at 16:10 in the second period to give Spokane a 1-0 lead. Miske’s goal came on the Chiefs’ first power play of the game.

Kolten Olynek pushed the advantage to 2-0 at 12:10 in the third for the Chiefs’ second power play goal of the game.

Keanu Yamamoto fed his brother Kailer for an empty-netter at 19:19 in the third as the two Spokane natives combined to make it 3-0.

Jason Fram, who scored twice in Spokane’s 5-4 overtime loss at Everett Oct. 10, assisted on each of the Chiefs’ first two goals.

Everett’s best chances came in the opening frame. The Silvertips had a 5-on-3 advantage for more than a minute early in the first period, but the Chiefs withstood both penalties.

Carter Hart took the loss despite recording 30 saves. His point-blank stop at 9:00 in the first kept the game scoreless and the teams went into the first intermission tied at 0-0.

Everett scratched star defenseman Noah Juulsen, who played for Team WHL Monday and Tuesday in the CHL Canada-Russia Series in Kelowna and Kamloops. He and Hart, who also competed for Team WHL, flew to Spokane Wednesday morning. Hart did not play in Tuesday’s game.

The Silvertips return to Xfinity Arena for home games Friday and Saturday against Spokane and Swift Current. Next week Everett heads to Alberta for the first of two trips to play Central Division teams.
