EVERETT — A local nonprofit and its partners plan to raise their voices this weekend in order to raise money for a music program that helps people with developmental disabilities.
The fifth annual Voices Among Us concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Northwest Music Hall in the Everett Mall next to Macy’s.
Voices of the Village and The Pin Drops are performing. Snacks, drinks and concert gear can be purchased at the event.
Voices of the Village is a 32-person musical ensemble in which the singers and band members have developmental disabilities. They play all over the state throughout the year, with 42 gigs last year that were seen by an estimated 4,500 people, according Village Community Services, the nonprofit parent organization behind Voices of the Village. They play at festivals, fairs, fundraisers and coffee houses.
The Pin Drops, a classic rock band, is set to perform after Voices of the Village. They’ll play “danceable rock and roll,” according to a news release.
The two bands plan to end the night with a few songs performed together.
The audience is encouraged to participate with dancing, singing and drums, tambourines or shakers handed out at the concert.
Entry is by donation. The nonprofit is asking for at least $10 per person or $35 for a family. All proceeds go to Voices of the Village and Village Community Services’ music and arts program.
The Arlington-based nonprofit helps people with disabilities become more independent at home, in social settings and at work, including volunteer jobs. The music and arts program is one of the opportunities they offer. Anyone is welcome to join, regardless of ability. The musicians meet Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Arlington United Church, 338 N. Macleod Ave. A $1 donation is suggested for attending the weekly program.
