The National Weather Service issued flood warnings this morning for the Stillaguamish and Skykomish rivers.
Heavy rain is swelling both rivers, causing the Skykomish to rise to 14.4 feet at 9 a.m. today near Gold Bar, according to a Weather Service flood gauge. Flood stage for the river is 15 feet.
Major flooding is predicted for homes along the river in Sultan and in low areas of the Skykomish River Valley from Gold Bar to Monroe, meteorologist Johnny Burg said. The water is expected to crest at 19 feet at 2 a.m. Saturday, he said.
Homeowners near the river should be preparing for rising waters, Burg said.
Riverbank erosion is also expected to be severe, likely filling the river with a lot of debris, he said.
The Stillaguamishs south fork near Granite Falls was also on the rise this morning. It was up to 13 feet at 8:45 a.m. today – one foot short of flood stage, The river is expected to crest at about 18 feet at 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the Weather Service.
