The Seahawks made another move with their 53-man roster Tuesday, waiving wide receiver Chris Matthews and signing receiver Kevin Smith from the practice squad.
Matthews is best known for his breakout performance in last season’s Super Bowl, when he came out of nowhere to record four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. However, the 6-foot-5 Matthews has been a bit player this season, registering just four catches for 54 yards in nine games.
Smith, who spent his college years at the University of Washington, was a standout for the Seahawks during the preseason, particularly on special teams. He had been on Seattle’s practice squad since the beginning of the season.
The move comes one day after the Seahawks claimed defensive tackle A.J. Francis off waivers from Miami and waived defensive tackle David King. Seattle will have to make an additional roster move if it wants to activate cornerback Jeremy Lane off the physically-unable-to-perform list for Sunday’s home game against San Francisco.
