IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with quarterback Brandon Weeden on Tuesday.
The news didn’t come as a surprise, as owner Jerry Jones said on his radio show earlier in the day that the Cowboys would have Tony Romo and Matt Cassel as the two active quarterbacks for Sunday’s game at Miami.
Weeden, 32, has been with the Cowboys since 2014, serving as Romo’s primary backup. But he went 0-4 in games he started when Romo was injured.
Weeden lost his lone start against Arizona last season, and then went 0-3 in his stretch filling in for Romo this season. Weeden has not won a game in which he started since his rookie season in 2012.
The Cowboys traded for Cassel and inserted him into the starting lineup following the team’s bye week. Cassel didn’t fare much better, though, going 0-4.
Romo, who broke his left collarbone in a Week 2 win at Philadelphia, will return this Sunday.
In his time with the Cowboys, Weeden played in nine games with four starts. He was 95 of 139 passing for 1,042 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions.
Weeden started his career in Cleveland, as a 2012 first-round draft pick coming out of Oklahoma State. He lasted only two seasons, going 5-15 as a starter and throwing more interceptions (26) than touchdowns (23).
