Obafemi Martins was named the Seattle Sounders’ most valuable player for 2015 after leading the team with 15 goals.
Martins also received the honor in 2014.
In 2015, his goal total was ninth in Major League Soccer. He finished third in the league with an average of 0.76 goals per game. Martins became the first play in league history to score 15 goals on fewer than 45 shots. He also contributed six assists. His production earned him a postseason call to the Nigeria national team.
The club
previously announced goalkeeper Stefan Frei as its defender of the year, and defender/midfielder Brad Evans as humanitarian of the year.
Frei led a defense that allowed the fewest goals in MLS. He set a club record with 111 saves and set career bests with 10 shutouts and a 1.08 goals-against average.
Evans, the team captain, has been active in a variety of community- and club-related causes including Ronald McDonald House, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Breast Cancer Awareness and the Humane Society. He finished second to Columbus’ Kei Kamara for MLS humanitarian of the year.
