Everett Silvertips fall to Calgary Hitmen in shootout

The Game

This has to feel like another one that got away. The Everett Silvertips took a 2-1 lead into the third period, then got a power play goal from Matt Fonteyne to go up two with less than 13 minutes to play.

But the Hitmen scored twice in a 53-second span midway through the third and held on through overtime before winning in a shootout.

Carter Hart and the Tip had been so stingy up to that point that the quickness with which Calgary tied it seemed to catch everyone off guard. Colby Harmsworth used some deft stick work to deke Mackenzie Dwyer and finished past Hart in impressive fashion for the tying goal.

The Hitmen also did a good job killing the penalty as Everett was just 1-for-5 with the man advantage. The Tips’ only power play goal was Fonteyne’s in the third that seemed to salt the game away.

Everett garnered a point, however, despite falling to 0-2 in shootouts this year. Carson Stadnyk was the final shooter and Cody Porter saved the 20-year-old’s shot to end the game. Stadnyk was the only Tips shooter who also shot in the 3-2 shootout loss to Brandon Oct. 28. Riley Sutter and Devon Skoleski were the other two shooters Friday.

The Tips scratched Sean Mallonee, Jake Christiansen, Dario Winkler and Brian King. Winkler did not play much of Friday’s game after leaving with an undisclosed injury.

The Hitmen weren’t at full strength either. Travis Sanheim, their third-leading scorer was out and is listed as day-to-day with an upper body injury. Reigning Player of the Week Jackson Houck left the ice and went up the tunnel to the dressing room in the first period, and did not return.

The Turning Point

After falling behind 3-1, the Hitmen scored twice in less than a minute to draw even midway through the third period.

Three Stars

1. Calgary F Radel Fazleev: The center was the only player to score in the shootout.

2. Everett F Remi Laurencelle: The overager opened the scoring and extended his point streak to six games.

3. Calgary F Carsen Twarynski: The forward scored Calgary’s first goal that tied the game 1-1 in the opening period.
