After reading Sunday’s letter adamantly expressing what we should and shouldn’t do about refugees, it would be interesting to hear just what being that beacon of light means to the author. (“We can’t afford them, in any way.”) It might prove illuminating but with all her fears, maybe searchlight towers would be more fitting.
Historically, predisposed fears of “them” give way to and feed the mob mentality, which always turns out badly. We should take to heart the examples the people of Paris and Charlotte, N.C., have shown in standing against the terror and hate by refusing to live in fear and change who they are and what they believe in.
Of affordability, consider trying to defend one of the richest nations and the world leader for freedoms declining to help because … it’d cost too much? We don’t always get to choose our moments, but it’s those moments that define us.
