EVERETT — A level 2 burn ban has been issued for Snohomish County.
Stagnant weather is causing pollution to linger in the air from fireplaces and other sources. On Thursday, pollution in Snohomish County reached levels considered to be unhealthy for people who are sensitive to irritants in the air, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. That includes those with asthma or other respiratory problems.
During a stage 2 ban, no burning is allowed in wood-burning fireplaces, wood stoves or fireplace inserts, even if they are certified. There is an exception for homeowners who have permission from the Clean Air Agency because they have no other adequate source of heat.
Outdoor fires also are banned.
A less-severe stage 1 burn ban was issued for Pierce County and also remained in effect for Darrington on Thursday afternoon.
Violating a burn ban can carry a fine of up to $1,000.
