SEATTLE — It was first a musical, then a movie. Quite possibly it’s best on stage.
No matter how many times you’ve watched the 1965 movie “The Sound of Music,” you might consider buying a ticket to see the 5th Avenue Theatre’s current production of the Rodgers &Hammerstein classic.
Directed by David Bennett, the show runs through Jan. 3 with a cast of the region’s finest, along with great sets, costumes and a full orchestra.
If you’ve been in cave for the past 60 years or you are a kid, this is the story of the young governess Maria, who leaves the Salzburg, Austria, convent to take care of the motherless von Trapp family. It’s a story full of humor, danger, bravery and love.
In the musical theater genre, “The Sound of Music” is a favorite. The songs include “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”
The original 1959 Broadway production of “The Sound of Music” starred Mary Martin (Peter Pan) as Maria. The first national tour featured Florence Henderson (Brady Bunch) as Maria. And Julie Andrews sang from the hills in the legendary film, now 50 years old.
The 5th’s version stars Kirsten deLohr Helland as Maria. Helland, who grew up in Gig Harbor, is known to Everett audiences for her turn as Eponine in Village Theatre’s “Les Miserables.” Most recently at the 5th, she was Rizzo in “Grease.”
Hans Altweis plays Capt. Georg von Trapp, Jessica Skerritt is Elsa Schraeder, David Pichette is Max Detweiler, Anne Allgood is Mother Abbess, Shaye Hodgins is Liesel and Kody Bringman plays Rolf.
Tickets start at $29. For information, go to www.5thavenue.org, call the box office at 206-625-1900 or visit the theater at 1308 5th Ave., Seattle.
