Everett Philharmonic plays to the imagination

EVERETT — Imagine.

Imagine playing a cello. Imagine conducting an orchestra.

If you have children who are about ready to play a musical instrument, this concert is for you.

“Music for the Imagination,” the annual family concert by the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra, will be performed Sunday afternoon at Everett Civic Auditorium.

Directed by Paul-Elliott Cobbs, the orchestra will play Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, but kids are sure to enjoy John Williams’ music for “Star Wars” and the music from Disney’s “Frozen.”

What’s especially great is that after the concert, children are encouraged to “meet” the instruments of the orchestra as well as the people who play them. Hands-on opportunities are included and questions are encouraged.

However, the concert is not only for the young.

Adults will get a kick out of way the program is reflected in recognizable tunes of the season, said Cobbs.

A highlight of the afternoon will be a performance of Chopin’s “Andante Spianato et Polonaise” by Casey Sim, a 16-year-old pianist from Bothell. She is the Snohomish County Music Teacher Association’s 2015 Concerto Competition winner. She has been studying piano since she was 7 years old.

The program opens with “Lieutenant Kije’s Sleigh Ride” by Sergei Prokofiev, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Dance of the Tumblers” from “Snow Maiden.” It also includes the “1812 Overture” of Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

Then, conducting her own arrangement of the rousing J.P. Sousa march “The Stars and Stripes Forever” will be EPO Spring Fling auction winner, Elaine Weltz, a dedicated keyboardist for the orchestra.

The annual family concert is one of the Philharmonic’s favorites, said member Cami Davis.

“It’s fun for all of us,” she said.
