Well, if you like exciting games, the Apple Cup came through once again. For Husky fans, however, this year’s showdown with the Cougs was anything but fun.
For a neutral observer (or a WSU fan) this one was pretty fun though. Both teams ripped off big play after big play all night and the momentum went back and forth several times.
The Huskies scored on plays of 89 yards, 23, 61 and one (ok, so that wasn’t such a big play), while the Cougars had touchdowns of 41, 25, 19, 28, 40 and 35 yards. That’s nine touchdowns of 19 yards or more, and four of 40 yards or more.
The Husky offense put up good numbers again, gaining 464 yards, but the defense had a tough time with the Cougars, who had 509 yards, including 399 from Alex Brink.
Jake Locker, back after missing last week’s game with a neck injury, rushed for 103 yards on 14 carries, and passed for 225 more, but he completed only 12 of 35 passes (though five drops didn’t help).
Louis Rankin, who had rushed for 539 yards in his previous three games, was held to 72 on 23 carries.
Anthony Russo was Washington’s leading receiver with 101 yards on five catches.
For WSU Brink did the most damage with 399 yards and five touchdowns. Brandon Gibson had six catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns, both in the fourth quarter.
Christopher Ivory added 114 rushing yards for WSU.
Defesively, WSU was led by Andy Mattingly, who had eight tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and three pass breakups.
