Navy Junior ROTC shows what it’s got

The Quil Ceda Battalion of the Marysville School District Navy Junior ROTC program held its Evening Parade on Nov. 16 at the Marysville-Pilchuck High School gym. In all, 150 cadets from seven different high schools participated.

Cadets were accompanied by the school band as they demonstrated chain of command, precision and attention to detail. Drill teams performed as the community looked on, including dignitaries Mayor Jon Nehring and Marysville World War II veteran Art Unruh.

The reviewing officer was Cmdr. Derek Dwyer, commanding officer of the Navy Operational Support Command at Naval Station Everett. Inspections were by Capt. Dan Wenceslao, area manager of Navy Junior ROTC Area 13, who gave 29 cadets a score of a perfect 10 on appearance and knowledge.

Overall, the battalion earned a Bravo Zulu streamer in recognition of their dedication and commitment. It also received a patriotism award from Alan Mandigo on behalf of the Military Order of the World Wars.

Computer science teen serves at Model UN

Monroe teen Alexandra Ash served as chair of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development at the 2015 Pacific Model United Nations, held Nov. 21-22 in Seattle.

Ash is in her junior year at Sky Valley Education Center and takes classes at Cascadia Community College through Running Start. She has participated in the last few Model UN programs through SVEC.

Computer science is a passion for Ash, who taught third-graders and high school girls how to program at University of Washington camps over the summer. She also volunteers with SVEC’s robotics team.

“I love teaching the students and helping immerse them in the engineering field,” Ash said. “It starts as a foreign language to them, and soon they get to really understand it and have a passion for it.”
