STANWOOD — Mischief in Stanwood last week landed two local teens behind bars.
The boys, 13 and 16, are under investigation for a burglary at the construction site for the new YMCA along 267th Street NW.
It happened about 6 p.m. Dec. 9. Stanwood Police Chief Rick Hawkins happened to be in a meeting with YMCA leaders at the time.
A neighbor at the Brookdale senior apartments heard banging noises at the construction site across the street and called 911, Hawkins said.
The site is surrounded by heavy fencing, he said. Officers found one of the boys running away. The other was still inside the construction area.
“We called the company,” Hawkins said. “One of their construction supervisors came to the site.”
It was too dark that night to tally all the damage, he said. More was found after daybreak the following morning. The boys had broken into a construction trailer. One of them had a small amount of money on him that had been taken from the trailer, Hawkins said.
The boys also knocked over and broke bricks while trying to get through the trailer door. They eventually shimmied in through a window.
The construction company this week was working on a damage total, which so far is about $8,000, Hawkins said. That figure includes the labor costs for repairs.
The boys were booked Dec. 9 into Denney Juvenile Justice Center for investigation of second-degree burglary, a felony. It was unclear Tuesday whether they have since been released.
A new $22 million YMCA building is going up at the site where there used to be a Resilience Fitness gym. The center is expected to open late next year.
