Here’s what Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had to say on his Monday morning radio show on 710 AM:
– Carroll described Sunday’s 23-17 loss to St. Louis as a “bad outing. It was hard to watch us be so far off.” He said the most frustrating thing was the team just not being able to function, mentioning the bad snaps, penalties and turnovers as examples. He said he thought the result was more about what Seattle did wrong than what the Rams did right, and that he thought the struggles by the offensive line were just a bad week rather than a sign of regression.
– Carroll pointed to third down as an indicator. The Seahawks were still good on third down, going 8-for-17. However, there were two high-profile mistakes on third-and-short at key junctures that killed drives — the Will Tukuafu fumble in the first quarter that was returned for a touchdown, and the bad snap by Patrick Lewis in the fourth quarter that took away a scoring opportunity.
– Seattle wasn’t able to get anything going in the run game. Carroll thought the line started blocking better later in the game, but by then the Seahawks were behind and had turned to the pass to try and get back into it.
– Carroll said he didn’t see any sign during the week that a letdown was coming. He described it as a good week of practice.
– Seattle is already in the playoffs, with the only thing left to determine being whether the Seahawks are the fifth or sixth seed in the NFC. But when asked whether he would manage next Sunday’s game at Arizona by resting players, Carroll said he wouldn’t do that. He thinks it’s more important to get the team playing right than it is to rest players.
– Carroll was once again asked about the status of running back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch has missed six game because of his abdominal injury, and with the Seahawks unable to run the ball against the Rams there seems to be more urgency about getting Lynch back. Carroll revealed that Lynch, who has been doing his rehab in San Francisco, was in Seattle this weekend. Otherwise, Carroll remained as vague as ever about when or if the Seahawks will get their star rusher back.
– In other injuries, Carroll said both strong safety Kam Chancellor and tackle Russell Okung, who sat out Sunday, remain day-to-day. Chancellor (tailbone) made some progress over the weekend, but it’s been slow. Okung (calf) has yet to resume running.
