LYNDEN — Glacier Peak battled to the end, but came up six points short from giving Lynden Christian their first loss of the season. The Grizzlies were playing without Paisley Johnson for a large portion of the game due to foul trouble, but hung in tough with the Lyncs who came in fourth place in the 1A state tournament last season.
“They are a solid team,” Glacier Peak head coach Brian Hill said. “That’s why we wanted to play them. We want to be tested early and throughout the season. I told them ‘We don’t need to be playing our best basketball right now, we need to be playing our best in February and March.’”
The Lyncs were led by 6-foot-2 senior post Kara Bajema who scored 29 points. According to Hill, the Grizzlies were able to handle the Lyncs’ height advantage very well, despite only having one player over 6-feet.
Junior post Kayla Watkins had 21 points for Glacier Peak and senior guard Natalie Rasmussen added 14.
Glacier Peak started out hot leading 35-30 at the half, but Lynden Christian’s 19 points in the third and fourth quarter overwhelmed the Grizzlies defense.
“We need to work on some of the smaller things,” Hill said. “We made some mistakes on defense and they capitalized on them.”
Glacier Peak will face Mountlake Terrace next Wednesday and take on undefeated Lynnwood the Wednesday after.
