The Game
The Everett Silvertips gutted out what amounted to a statement victory last night with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Kelowna Rockets.
We had this in today’s paper. You can also read this take from the Kelowna perspective.
Granted the Rockets were playing without six forwards due to World Juniors, suspensions and injuries. Nevertheless, Everett snapped Kelowna’s nine-game home winning streak and the Tips won their fifth road game in their last six opportunities.
Dawson Leedahl showed why he was named captain as he netted the game-winner at 1:27 in the overtime period. The Silvertips improved to 4-0 in games decided in overtime though they are 0-2 in shootouts.
Everett goaltender Carter Hart returned to form with a 24-save, one-goal effort. Kelowna netminder Jackson Whistle was equally as impressive with 34 saves in the losing effort. Both goaltenders are among the top four in goals allowed and save percentage. Hart leads the league in victories with 20 while Whistle is second with 19. Whistle managed to turn aside all 20 of Everett’s third-period shots to force overtime.
The Turning Point
Captain Dawson Leedahl scored off an assist from assistant captain Cole MacDonald at 2:27 in overtime to give Everett the victory.
Three Stars
1. Kelowna G Jackson Whistle: The Rockets goaltender stopped 34 of 36 shots including 20 in the third period to suffer the hard-luck defeat.
2. Everett G Carter Hart: The Silvertips 17-year-old recorded 24 saves for his league-leading 20th victory.
3. Kelowna F Dillon Dube: Dube scored the first goal of the game, and his 15 th of the season.
Bonus
Be sure to check out the latest People’s Power Rankings as compiled by Paul Figler. The Silvertips slipped to sixth in the latest Western Conference poll, but could rectify that with a strong performance the remainder of the week.
