Final thoughts as the Everett Silvertips defeat the Kamloops Blazers in overtime

The Game

Saturday was another gutsy effort from the Silvertips. Head coach Kevin Constantine has raved all season about his team’s level of desire and willingness to compete. Saturday was another example as the Tips could have easily wilted after going down 3-1 early in the third period. They had a solid week, after all, with two wins over Kelowna already in hand.

But they didn’t. Matt Fonteyne and Carson Stadnyk scored third-period goals that tied the game, and then the Tips worked their 3-on-3 overtime magic as Noah Juulsen took the puck to the net himself and scored the game-winner 46 seconds in.

The defeat sullied an impressive showing from Kamloops net minder Connor Ingram, who recorded 34 saves as Everett continued the shot barrage it put on Kelowna this week. A much anticipated showdown between Ingram and Everett goaltender Carter Hart didn’t come to fruition as Hart was given the evening off after feeling a bit under the weather, according to Tips broadcaster Mike Benton. Consequently Mario Petit earned his first win with 14 saves in his second start of the season, though he wasn’t tested a whole lot.

Thus the Tips remain in first place as they finished a very important four-game week with a 3-1 record. And with Tri-City’s 4-2 victory over Seattle Saturday, Everett’s lead now sits at three points. Lastly, the Tips currently boast the league’s longest winning streak at three games, and are 7-3 in their previous 10.

The Turning Point

We’ll go with Matt Fonteyne’s power play tally at 7:38 in the third. Fonteyne’s goal cut Everett’s deficit to 3-2 and sparked the comeback as Everett won for the first time this season after trailing through two periods.

Three Stars

1. Kamloops G Connor Ingram: The goaltender had 34 saves in a losing effort.

2. Kamloops F Matt Revel: Revel scored a goal and had an assist.

3. Everett F Carson Stadnyk: Stadnyk scored the game-tying goal for the Tips.
