SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The 49ers waited just over two hours after their 5-11 season ended to announce that Jim Tomsula “has been relieved of his head coaching duties.”
Team CEO Jed York will address the media at 10:30 a.m. Monday, his first formal news conference since introducing Tomsula last Jan. 14.
Tomsula served eight seasons as the 49ers defensive line coach before being tapped to replace Jim Harbaugh, who led the 49ers to three NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl in his four seasons.
“Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years,” York said in a statement. “We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated.
“This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future.”
The 49ers’ next coach will be their seventh in 15 years. The only teams that have gone through more are the Raiders, who are on their ninth coach in that time span.
About an hour after a 19-16, season-ending win over the St. Louis Rams, Tomsula said he had yet to speak with ownership about his status.
