RED DEER, Alberta — The Everett Silvertips have a pretty good track record when they score the first goal.
That didn’t hold true Saturday as the Red Deer Rebels scored four unanswered goals to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat the Tips 4-1 before 7,005 fans at Enmax Centrium.
The Memorial Cup host Rebels (31-15-1-2, 65 points) handed the U.S. Division-leading Silvertips (28-14-2-2, 60 points) their second straight defeat as Everett completed its six-game slate against the Central Division.
Prior to Friday’s game the Tips had gone unbeaten in regulation for 11 consecutive games. That ended with a 1-0 defeat Friday at Edmonton, and Saturday’s defeat was just Everett’s third loss in regulation since the second half of the season began.
Graham Millar put the Tips on the board 1:48 into the game as he capitalized on Everett’s first power play opportunity. Noah Juulsen and Patrick Bajkov assisted on the goal.
That was the only goal of the period, but the Rebels erupted for three tallies in the second period to take the commanding 3-1 lead.
Adam Helewka, acquired from the Spokane Chiefs at the WHL trade deadline, tied the game at 5:15 with assists from Michael Spacek and former Silvertip Ivan Nikolishin.
Colton Bobyk scored what stood up as the game-winning goal with assists from Jeff de Wit and Brandon Hagel via the power play at 8:59 in the second period.
Grayson Pawlenchuk added his 17th goal of the season with assists from de Wit and Hagel at 13:00 in the second to take the 3-1 lead into the third.
Habel scored the game’s final goal at 4:55 with assists from Pawlenchuk and Austin Strand.
Everett outshot the Rebels 15-8 in the opening period, but that number marked more than half of the Tips’ total for the game. Red Deer outshot Everett 17-14 over the final two periods.
The Silvertips were 1-for-2 on the penalty kill Saturday after a 1-for-3 showing in Friday’s loss to the Oil Kings. Everett hadn’t allowed a power play goal in the previous four games in what is one of the most improved areas for the Tips since the break.
Trevor Martin earned the win at goaltender for the Rebels as he stopped 28 of Everett’s 29 shots. Hagel had a goal and two assists for Red Deer while de Wit added two helpers.
Everett goaltender Carter Hart recorded 21 saves in his second consecutive loss.
The Silvertips, who have now completed a stretch in which they played 10 games in 16 days, are off until next Friday when they travel to Kennewick for a U.S. Division contest against the Tri-City Americans.
