Upcoming outdoor events

Enchantments: The lottery is now open for permits to camp in the Enchantments in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Leavenworth. The Enchantments are an extremely beautiful and extremely popular backpacking area. This year, the period that permits are required has been expanded. It now runs from May 15 to Oct. 31.

Permits are awarded randomly. Applications are accepted through March 2. There is a non-refundable $6 application fee. Permits will be drawn on March 14. Applicants need to check back to see if they received a permit. If so, the cost is $5 per person, per day. To get more details and submit an application, go to http://tinyurl.com/enchantmentspermit.

Hikes: Rangers will lead free, 3-mile hikes through old-growth forest in Rockport State Park at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays through April 30. Hikes begin at the parking lot and end with warm drinks in the Discovery Center. The park features an ADA-accessible trail. For more information, call Laura Busby at 360-853-8461 or email rockport@parks.wa.gov. A Discover Pass is required to park except for March 19 and 26, and April 22.

Streams: Learn about how to adopt local stream and help improve their habitat. Tom Murdoch, co-author of the “The Streamkeepers Field Guide” will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Northwest Stream Center at McCollum Park in Everett. Event is free but registration is required. Call 425-316-8592.

Gear grab: The Everett branch of The Mountaineers has a gear grab and potluck at 6:30 p.m. March 2 at Everett United Church of Christ, 2624 Rockefeller. You can buy, sell or trade gear. Bikes: Sharing Wheels is offering bicycle mechanic classes to help anyone learn how to maintain and repair their bikes. Two classes are offered. Basic bike mechanics is at 6 p.m. on March 2, March 20, May 11 or June 15. Classes are 3 1/2 hours. Class covers basic bike care, including flat tire replacement, brakes and derailers. $35.

Advanced bike mechanics is 6 to 9 p.m. April 6, 13, 20 or 27 or July 6, 13, 20 or 27. The class will teach more detailed bike care including cable systems and bearings. $100.
