EVERETT — An Everett teen faces more than 14 years in prison for a gang-fueled shooting in August that injured a 15-year-old boy.
Juan Beteran Monrroy pleaded guilty last week to first-degree armed assault and drive-by shooting. He is scheduled to be sentenced in March.
Beteran Monrroy, 18, doesn’t have any previous criminal convictions. Prosecutors plan to recommend a 14-year sentence.
The defendant fired a military-style rifle at a pickup truck carrying four teenagers. A 15-year-old was hit in the chest. The bullet perforated his heart but he survived.
Police were told that the victim and his friends were looking for Beteran Monrroy on Aug. 16 with plans to beat him up in retaliation for a gang beef. They ended up stopped next to him at an intersection on 112th Street SW in south Everett.
Beteran Monrroy pointed a gun at the pickup truck. The other teens threw a knife and baseball bat at the defendant’s car. They sped off and Beteran Monrroy opened fire.
Three months later the victim accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother in the face while playing with a gun. The boy survived.
The 15-year-old told detectives he bought the weapon after being shot in August. He pleaded guilty to illegal gun possession and assault. He served about a month in juvenile detention and is on probation for a year.
