LYNDEN — A Whatcom County man accused of torturing a teen who stole his gun and fired it at a park has been sentenced to one year in prison.
The News Tribune reported Larry Whitman was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to unlawful imprisonment, theft and assault, amounting to “torture.”
Whitman had confronted the teen after the boy stole his gun and used it in August at a Bellingham park. No one was injured in the shooting.
Court documents say Whitman took the boy to his shed, made him unclothe and put him in a freezer full of rotting meat.
Whitman’s attorney said his client now wishes he would’ve instead just called police.
The teen has pleaded guilty to stealing Whitman’s pistol and remains in juvenile detention for the park shooting.
