PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon man who fatally shot a police officer before being killed by another officer had an extensive criminal history dating back to at least the early 1980s, according to court records.
Most recently, Seaside police Sgt. Jason Goodding tried to arrest 55-year-old Phillip Ferry on a warrant for felony assault on Friday, reported The Oregonian. Ferry shot and killed Goodding. Another Seaside officer returned fire, killing Ferry.
Ferry was convicted of several crimes, including assaulting a public safety officer, in six different Oregon counties since October 1983, according to court records. Jail records show he was booked into Clatsop County Jail 41 times since May 1991.
Ferry had lived at several different addresses in seaside over the years, but is believed to have been staying at a homeless shelter recently, said Clatsop County District Attorney Joshua Marquis on Monday.
“I’ve spoken with several deputies and they’ve told me that Mr. Ferry fought with officers every single time he was arrested,” Marquis said. Although Ferry had been violent with officers, Marquis said there was nothing in his criminal history that indicated he would use a weapon on them.
Officers used a Taser on Ferry Friday after he refused to show his hands. Ferry pulled out a gun as Goodding tried to restrain him and fired once at Goodding. The other officer then fired three times at Ferry and hit him at least once.
Goodding and Ferry were both taken to the hospital and both died while receiving treatment.
