Archbishop Murphy junior Anfernee Gurley helped lead the U.S. Under-17 National Team to a 49-7 win over the Ontario Under-17 Team this past Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. For his role, Gurley took home the game’s Most Valuable Player award.
Gurley had his biggest impact on special teams, completing a fake-punt pass for a first down and returning three punts for 142 yards, including a 75-yard return for a touchdown.
“I loved coming here and playing with the best in the U.S. against the best in Canada,” Gurley said after the game. “I feel like I’m an all-around athlete. Defense wins championships and we were flying around and having fun. As far the punt returns, I got a lot of help on those. You don’t do those by yourself.”
Gurley helped the Wildcats reach the 2A state semifinals this past season where the Wildcats lost a heartbreaker to Tumwater at the Tacoma Dome.
