BREWSTER — The Colville Confederated Tribes have issued a $5,000 citation for the killing a rare hawk owl.
KING-TV reported a northern hawk owl was found dead hanging from a tree near Brewster in January.
Bird watchers reportedly had flocked to the area to see the owl. A couple who had seen the bird alive reportedly heard a gunshot after driving away and returned to find it hanging by one foot.
The tribes fined a man $5,000 for the owl’s death.
The owls are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
