Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 invites high school seniors in the Edmonds and Mukilteo school districts to apply for its Freedom Scholarships. Four scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded. Public, private and homeschool students who live in the two school district boundaries are welcome to apply.
Aside from a transcript and resume, students will be asked to write a 500- to 750-word essay on “the meaning of freedom to them and how our Constitution establishes and maintains a culture of freedom in our country.”
Applications are at high school career centers, or at www.vfw8870.org. Deadline is April 15.
Learn CPR: Snohomish County Fire District 1 is offering two CPR classes in February as part of American Heart Month. A free class offers brief training and anyone can drop in from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 16 at Red Onion Burgers, 21005 44th Ave. W, Mountlake Terrace. A more intensive class, which costs $70, runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at district headquarters, 12425 Meridian Ave. S., Everett. The Everett class requires registration. Meet Mill Creek cops: The city has scheduled a meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to introduce its new Police Chief Greg Elwin.
Interim Police Chief Larry Dickerson, detectives and other staff from the department plan to be at City Hall for the event too. Information about emergency preparedness and city services will be available.
