When I was a young man, we didn’t have a “homeless” problem. But we did have “hobos” and “winos.” The difference was that “hobos” would work and “winos” begged. Now we just lump everyone into one category called “homeless.” It sounds less offensive and simpler to solve as a problem. Trouble is, it’s not so simple. Many on the street are mentally ill. Drugs and alcohol make it all worse, and, in fact, can cause mental deterioration. The truth is that most (but not all) homelessness is caused by booze and/or drugs. Addiction is hard to kick because many addicts don’t want to change and will remain in that lifestyle in order to continue in their addiction. Along with free public housing comes authority and accountability! Accountability and authority must be avoided, and living on the street fits the bill. Bottom line is that the homeless will always be with us. If you haven’t noticed, too many just want a handout. Those who want a hand up are the ones we should be helping. Anything else is just enabling.
