Dig: Help spruce up Edmonds garden
Volunteers are invited to help EarthCorps tidy up the Edmonds Wildlife Habitat Project’s Native Plant Demonstration Garden, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 5 at the Willow Creek Hatchery, 95 Pine St. The work party will have you mulching, weeding and cleaning. No green thumb required.
The demonstration garden, created and maintained by volunteers, is free and open to the public and highlights ways you can enhance your urban backyard with native plants that are friendly to wildlife.
EarthCorps is a youth leadership, volunteer and environmental education program affiliated with AmeriCorps.

Prep: Series of talks focus on ‘Big One’
A three-part series on “Preparing for ‘The Big One’” with Lynn Sterbenz of the Everett Office of Emergency Management will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 9, 16 and 23.
The first presentation, “Understanding Earthquakes,” will cover the basics of earthquake science, including plate tectonics, the three types of fault lines, earthquake magnitude, and the role of soil-type in earthquake effects.
The March 16 session will focus on recent and historical quakes in the region and discuss future events. The last session will focus on practical ways you can prepare for quakes.

Plan: South county disaster preparedness
Meanwhile, a focus on disaster preparedness in south Snohomish County communities is planned at a town hall-style event, “Count Me In When Disaster Strikes,” 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 15 in Woodway Hall at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood.
Noted geologist Brian Atwater is the keynote speaker. First responders also will provide basic tips. Find your address on a wall-sized map. And gather plenty of practical information about preparing for disasters and other emergencies.

Apply: Edmonds teens can travel to Japan
The deadline for Edmonds-area teens to apply for an exchange program in Hekinan, Japan, has been extended to March 23. Students age 14-18 are invited to apply for the visit, set for the last two weeks of July. The estimated cost is from $1,600 to $2,000, depending on airfare.
