OLYMPIA — This could be a long day and night for state lawmakers.
Thursday is the last scheduled day of the 2016 regular session and the House and Senate continue to negotiate an agreement on a supplement to the state budget.
If lawmakers don’t approve an agreement and adjourn by midnight, Gov. Jay Inslee has said, he will summon them into special session starting Friday.
A key sticking point is the potential use of the Budget Stabilization Account, better known as the state’s Rainy Day fund.
The House budget, crafted by majority Democrats, uses $467 million from the fund to pay for last year’s wildfires as well as services for homeless and school construction. The Senate budget, crafted by majority Republicans, doesn’t tap the fund at all.
Also, Inslee has said he will veto 37 bills sitting on his desk. The fate of those bills must be decided today and the governor’s choices are to sign them, veto them or allow them to become law without his signature.
On Monday, he made it abundantly clear the red veto pen will come out if the two chambers don’t at least inform him they have reached an accord by midnight.
